Author: SELECT COMMITTEE ON THE METROPOLIS WATER BILL Title: Metropolis Water Bill: Minutes of Evidence Taken Before The...
Description: London, House of Commons 1851 822pp, 105pp index 33x22, library binding Ex lib, with a couple of stamps; the first two pages are facsimiles copied from another copy presumably to replace ones that had been damaged or lost; a couple of further pages have repairs to missing pieces, not impacting the text; good thus. The 1852 Metropolis Water Act was the first attempt to regulate the private water suppliers in London, and set some minimum standards. The main effect of this Act was to prohibit the drawing of water supplies from the tidal Thames, and to require that all water supplied should be filtered. The index, with its summaries of the evidence given by each witness, is particularly interesting and useful, allowing readers to see the diametrically opposing positions taken by different expert witnesses like Joseph Heron, James Vetch and so on.
