Description: London, House of Commons 1820-21 33pp; 133pp 34x21, black binding, glt lettering on spine Very good. The problems of the old London Bridge had been evident for many years, and a competition to design a replacement had been held in 1799. But work had not begun, and this Select Committee appears to be an effort to finally get work started. The main witness was John Rennie, whose five-arch replacement bridge was the approved design, and the Committee also heard from lightermen whose boats - and lives - were put at risk by the dangerous currents under the old bridge.Work on Rennie's design was eventually begun in 1824, and it was opened in 1831 (it was itself replaced in 1971, and it can now be found in Arizona. The old London Bridge was demolished once Rennie's new bridge was opened, fundamentally changing the flow of the Thames through the city, as had been discussed in this report.
