Title: The Royal Commission: The London City Livery Companies' Vindication
Description: London, Gilbert and Rivington (printed by) 1885 viii, 306pp 26x15, white cloth, red txt and decorations, red edges Cloth grubby and edge worn, with slight loss at top and bottom of spine, discreet ex-lib plate on eps, couple of small stamps, ink dedication from the author on title page. This was part of the reaction to Joseph FB Firth and the Municipal Reform League's attempts to modernise the state of London's governance, and is made up of various submissions to the Commission with annotations. The anonymous author attacks the principles that the Royal Commission had been established under, describes as Firth as 'dishonourable' and alleges that his influential book 'Municipal London' contains charges that are 'entirely and utterly untrue', and in his introduction reaches the heights of impassioned rhetoric when he 'trusts that steel wythes of surpassing strength may gird an united phalanx faggot of resistance...' (the mind boggles). The attempt to preserve the privileges of the Livery Companies did not succeed: Firth's campaign ended with the creation of the first elected London County Council in 1889.
