Title: The Charities Of London Comprising An Account Of The Operations, Resources, And General Condition Of The Charitable, Educational, And Religious Institutions Of London. [bound together with] A Supplement to the Charities of London; Their Objects, Operations and Present Condition, Containing a more Detailed Account of Each Institution. Corrected to April 1863.
Description: London, Sampson Low, Son & Co. (1862)1863 (new edition) xviii, 322pp, 176pp (Supplement) 17x11, green cloth, glt text and decoration, bevelled, red edges. Cloth a little edge worn, top of first 50 or so pages damp marked, binding a bit stiff, good thus. Huge and fascinating list of Victorian charities and benevolent societies, from schools, missionary societies to homes for distressed gentlewomen. The interest is both in seeing the early years of organisations that have shaped the UK to this day, and the tiny but no less important organisations that Londoners saw it as their duty to support. The supplement was also sold separately as "Low's One Shilling Guide to the Charities of London" - it starts with a furious denunciation of an anonymous rival publisher who had passed off the contents of Low's original 1862 edition as his own rather than acknowledge the source.
