Title: Metropolitan Improvements or London in the Nineteenth Century: Being a Series of Views of the New and Most Interesting Objects in the British Metropolis & its Vicinity From Original Drawings by Thomas H. Shepherd with Historical, Topographical & Critical Illustrations by James Elmes,
Description: London, Jones & Co, 1827, 1829 fp, engr title-page, vi, 172pp, second engraved title page, 80 engraved single-sided plates, one being a map of Regent's Park, [2] alphabetical list of engravings 28x22, calf, patterned spine, title in glt text on label. Ex-lib, mark on spine, couple of stamps, browning and spotting throughout, good thus. Title page for text has 1827, the title page for the plates is from the 1829 'London and its Environs', but the index to the engravings correctly refers to the 'Improvements' pagination. Shepherd's famous engravings are an excellent source for building developments in this period of rapid growth. Not just grand buildings - through there are plenty of those - but some of the more functional of London's new architecture, from a gas works to a newly built shot tower are included, as well as Nash's work at Regent's Park (Weinreb and Breman, 24:34)
