Author: STAYTON George Henry Title: Wooden Pavement in the Metropolis
Description: London, ICE 1884 pp 240-312, fold out map, diagrams, tables. 22x15, offprint recently bound in burgundy cloth, glt text. Near fine. Proceedings of a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of the use of wooden blocks for road surfaces in London. At the time 53 miles were paved in this way, and were proving popular despite issues with slipperness during wet weather, and problems with odour on hot days (the blocks tended to absorb horse urine). The use of wood continued in London until asphalt became a cheaper alternative, well into the 20th Century.
