Title: Cyclopedia of Useful Arts, Mechanical and Chemical, Manufactures, Mining and Engineering (Volume 1, Division 1)
Description: London, George Virtue 1852 pp1-240, many illustrations, including fold out plan of the Great Exhibition. 27x18, red blind stamped cloth, glt decoration and text on front and spine. Rather rubbed and worn, spine pulled with slight loss at the top and bottom, a few pages loosening, two plates detached and loosely inserted. Originally inspired by the Great Exhibition, this was one of the great celebrations of Victorian technical and mechanical innovation. It was issued in nine successive parts, the intention being that the parts would rebound into volumes by the subscriber. The editor clearly didn't anticipate that the reader would read each 'Division' on its own, as the entry for Bridges in this volume stops mid-sentence at the end of page 240; those wanting the full entry would have to wait until Division 2 was in their hands! The second 1866 edition expanded over three volumes, but this is from the first two-volume edition.
