Description: London, Printed for the Author 1803 46pp (numbered i-viii, 9-46) 27x22, marbled boards, half bound in calf. Ex-libary, with a couple of discreet marks, backstrip rubbed and worn, with some loss at the top, first gathering slightly loose, good thus. Papworth (1775-1847) was a prolific and important architect of his time, known particularly for his work on country houses, but also as an artist, designer and craftsman of furniture, silverwork and glass - including a glass throne for the Shah of Persia. He was also one of the original signatories in 1834 of the resolution that led to the foundation of the Institute of British Architects [Colvin, 3rd ed, 729-734]This early publication is the first work on dry rot, and while still operating under misunderstandings of how fungi reproduce - there is much on corruption of the sap and foetid vapours - advice that treatment is difficult and must be thorough to remove all possible sources of reinfection seems sound.
