Author: VINCENT John Title: Country Cottages : A Series of Designs for an Inproved Class of Dwellings for Agricultural Labourers
Description: London, Robert Hardwick 1861 (second edition) viii, 19pp, 21 plates 38x28, brown cloth with glt decorative design to front, glt lettering to spine. Cloth rather worn and marked, with some small chips, rebound with new endpapers, some pages heavily foxed, plates are bound in slightly odd order (15 to 20, and then 1 to 14) but this seems to be as planned, good thus. Vincent's approach combined a strongly Mathusian approach - his view was that the lack of education in rural areas, early marriages and large families were suppressing rural wages and leading to increasingly extreme poverty - with a humane desire to ensure that agricultural workers lived in decent homes. His preface to this second edition responds robustly to criticism that his designs were too expensive.
