Frontis, xxiv, 205pp incl many illustrations plus numerous single-sided plates. 28x21, glt edges, rebacked with original spine, front and back retained, glt patterned spine, blind stamped and decorated - with crest of Kings College, London - front. Very nicely rebacked, in very good condition, apart from closed tear and glue mark on flyleaf. Professor of Drawing's Prize dedication on fep to Frederick Vincent Stokes, dated 1868; loosely inserted (original ffep?) gift dedication from Winfred G Stokes, daughter of Frederick Vincent, dated 1972 Petit's slightly coarse sketches have an curiously modern look to them. They were much admired by Gilbert Scott and are informative of their subjects but sit rather oddly with de la Motte's meticulous woodcuts. Petit discusses the validity of continental gothic as a basis for modern work, but his own preference is for the English gothic. A most attractive book, retaining most of its very attractive Victorian binding. The Times records Stoke's prize in its edition of 26th June 1868.
