Description: London, OUP, 1963 ix, 154pp, some b&w illustrations. 22x15, green cloth, illustrated dw. Very good in slightly rubbed but still good dw. The best account of the Jezreelites, a religious utopian sect and community, founded by James Jershom Jezreel (alias James Rowland White) in the 1880s and its mystical tower at Chatham Hill. The tower, originally planned as a perfect cube but eventually built slightly less tall than it was wide, was an extravagent design combining vast chambers, hydraulics, a spinning choir, and a huge printing room for the production of tracts. Not finished before the sect ran out of money and followers, it was eventually demolished in 1963.
