Title: The Charterhouse of London: Monastery, Palace, and Thomas Sutton's Foundation
Description: London, JM Dent and Sons 1912 xiv, 283pp, 37 bw plates 21x16, brown cloth, glt text, glt top edge. Small bump to bottom of spine, cloth slightly marked, browing to endpapers, contents good. Founded in 1371 as a Carthusian priory, the priory at Charterhouse was dissolved by Henry VIII in the 1530s. Most of the building was then redeveloped as a mansion. This was adapted in the early 17th century as an almshouse and school. The school moved to Surrey in the 1870s, but the almshouse remains. Devastated by fire during the Blitz, the Charterhouse underwent extensive restoration and reconstruction in the 1950s.
