Author: Felibien, Andre, sieur des Avaux et de Javercy Title: Entretiens Sur Les Vies Et Sur Les Ouvrages Des Plus Excellens Peintres Anciens Et Modernes
Description: Paris, D. Mariette, 1696. Hardcover. Old calf bindings. The hinges having largely failed, a previous owner crudely attached the covers to the backstrips with brown binders tape, and a preliminary blank in volume one is loose. Dampstain at top margin of some pages in each volume. The volumes' ample margins make it a good candidate for rebinding. Full page illustrations on pages 633, 635, 644 and 647 of volume one. Copious marginal annotations in French on the first 140 pages of volume one. A name which might be "Edward Thong" is written on the title page of volume one. A previous owner has inserted at the end of volume two an 18 page handwritten table title "An Historical or Chronological List of the Most Celebrated Masters in Painting, from the Earliest Account." The headings on the table are "Masters", "Disciples of", "Excell'd in", "Lived at", and "Died". The latest death year is 1714, and as several recent painters are listed without a death year, that may suggest when the table was made. Bears the bookplate of John Strange, possibly the 18th century British antiquary and diplomat of that name who also assembled a considerable art collection. Two volumes. Illus. Quarto. 2nd. edition. .
