Description: Tokyo, Kodanska,1988-1991. Elephant folio, in brown cloth binding, on the front blind stamped Japanese characters and on the spine gilt stamped characters. All volumes are cased in a pale silk clamshell, with the english and japanese title gilt stamped on the front and spine. All volumes in the original cardboard box with a printed title. Japanese woodblock prints and paintings came at first to Europe via the Dutch Japanese woodblock prints and paintings came at first to Europe via the Dutch trading base on the islang Dejima trading base on the island Dejima. They had considerable influence on painters as Van Gogh and Manet. The prints were so popular that there are at least as many prints in Europe as in Japan. This books represent the outstanding collection of eight museums, a standard reference work. 90 percent of the prints have not been published before.
