Description: Oval bust-length potrait of François de Vendôme, duc de Beaufort (1616-1669), the son of César, Duke of Vendôme, and Françoise de Lorraine. He was a prominent figure in the Fronde, and later went on to fight in the Mediterranean. Engraving on laid paper, sheet size 267 x 192 mm., platemark 196 x 127 mm. Engraved by François Hubert after the design of Alfred Graincourt, published in: Graincourt, Alfred. Les hommes illustres de la marine françoise. Paris, 1780. François Hubert (Abbeville 1744-1809 Paris) was a French engraver and printmaker, a pupil of Beauvarlet. Alfred Graincourt (active around 1780) was a French poet and author. He was the author of 'Les Hommes illustres de la marine françoise' (1780), for which he designed a series of portraits. In excellent condition, attached to carrier sheet by all four corners (very faint discolouration in the corners from glue).
