Description: Oval profile portait of Jean Sylvain Bailly (1736-1793), French astronomer, mathematician and political leader of the early part of the French Revolution. He serves as the mayor of Paris from 1789 to 1791, and was ultimately guillotined during the Reign of Terror. Etching and engraving in hand laid paper, on carrier sheet. Sheet size 189 x 139 mm., platemark 146 x 104 mm. Engraving by Simon-Charles Miger, after the painting by Louis Simon Boizot. Published by Miger in Paris, c. 1789. Simon-Charles Miger (1736-1820) was a French engraver; pupil, assistant and secretary of Cochin fils. In the bibliography by Chavignerie, a total of 298 prints by Miger are described. Louis Simon Boizot (1743-1809) was a French sculptor, son of Antoine and brother of Marie Louise Adélaïde. He was a pupil of Michel-Ange Slodtz. He received the prix de Rome in 1762 and went to Italy in 1765-70. In 1778 he was "reçu" at the Académie, while during the period 1773-85 he was director of sculpture studio at the Manufacture de Sèvres. During the French revolution he was a member of the Commission des Monuments. In very good condition, attached to carrier sheet by four corners. Some foxing and soiling in the margins.
