Description: Cologne (Col. Agrippinae), Corn. ab Egmond et socios, 1644, 12mo., full leather binding with ribbed and gold tooled spine, marbled edges, [22]+328+[69]+[58] pp., very good copy, with only minor signs of wear and minor staining, the construction is still very solid with the original binding including the original sewn headbands. With an engraved titlepage, three engraved portraits (Paulus III, Julius III and Pius IV), some woodcut endpieces (flaming heart IHS) and decorative initials. Several notes in ink (different hands) on the front endpapers and on the titlepage. l The Council of Trent, held between 1545 and 1563 in Trent, was the 19th ecumenical council of the Catholic Church. Prompted by the Protestant Reformation, it has been described as the embodiment of the Counter-Reformation.
