Description: Leiden (Lugduni Batavorum), Johannis Maire, 1633, 12mo., full parchment binding, with modest blind tooling and the author's name handwritten on the spine, [16]+200 pp., damaged spine but otherwise in fairly good condition, an error was made by the binder: two signatures have been swapped (signature B comes before signature A), printer's mark on titlepage (Fac et spera), decorative initial. Several owners left their name: an illegible name dated to 1650, a pasted in Ex Libris (Franc-Com-A-Thvn-Hohenstein-Tetschen) of Prince Franz of Thun and Hohenstein, an Austo-Hungarian noble and statesman (1847-1916), a pasted in Ex Libris of Dr. Frantiska Dvoraka and a stamped name: V. Engelshofen. l 3rd edition. Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount St Alban, also known as Lord Verulam (1561-1626) was an English philosopher and statesman who served as Attorney General and as Lord Chancellor of England. His works are credited with developing the scientific method and remained influential through the scientific revolution. Bacon has been called the father of empiricism.
