Geillustreerd met 16 fraaie anonieme etsen in de stijl van P. v.d. Borcht of Otto van Veen waarvan 4 uitvouwbaar en 12 in de tekst. Voet 1557B (gedrukt te Leiden, een deel van de oplage met Antwerpen op de titelpagina). Studie over de Romeinse gladiatoren in de vorm van een aantal dialogen tussen J. Lipsius, Victor Giselinus, Janus Lernutius, Janus Dousa sr. en Stephanus W. Pighius. De eerste, ongeillustreerde, editie verscheen in 1582 te Antwerpen. Full leather binding, front hinge broken, front cover loose, some gluestaining on endpapers, some minor waterdamage to first few and last part of the pages in the book, on page 71 a small hole is visible (due to rust?) with stains from this damage visible on page 70 and 72 (these are text pages), the print on page 91 has a small hole in the middle of the print, this hole is located between two fighting gladiators and causes no loss to the image, the margin of a text page from the index is torn, and not necessarily an imperfection, but good to note: The book has red sprinkled edges and on some pages the ink/paint has seeped through and is visible on the page. This copy is complete with all 16 engravings in the style of P. v.d. Borcht or Otto van Veen: 4 fold out (one with a tear on the fold), 12 single page engravings, armorial bookplate of viscounts Bruce of Ampthill and Bruce of Whorleton, study on Roman gladiators in the form of dialogues between J. Lipsius, Victor Giselinus, Janus Lernutius, Janus Dousa sr. en Stephanus W. Pighius. Scarce.
