Rumphius, originall Rumpf, was a German-born botanist engaged by the Dutch East India Company, in dutch abbreviation V.O.C., posted in what is now eastern-Indonesia, or the Moluccan Island group and beyond. Rumphius is best known for his major scientific work Herbarium Ambonensis, the first publication about tropical plant systems especially focused on the Moluccas. Also his second scientific publication, 1702, is his systematic description, with illustrations, of molluscs and shellfish collected from the Ambon Sea by local assistants.
