Title: Java; hoe eene kolonie moet bestuurd worden. [First dutch language edition, translated after the english:Java, or how to manage a colony...].
Description: Zutphen, W.J. Thieme, 1861. 2 vols. Small 8°, original clothbacked boaled cloth. [24], (xxxii), 268; (iv), 311pp., tabs. in text and a large folded table at end of vol. I. The author supplies an exhaustive description of Dutch colonial Indonesian administration in all its aspects, which is, according to author, unfortunately widely unknown & generally misunderstood. Author is especially interested in the cultivation system as introduced & developed by that great statesman J. van den Bosch & argues that the Dutch system is to be applied to the situation in India (esp. in Bengal) in order to stimulate the gradual entrance of India to the community of nations. Author propagates strongly that this is the only way for India to develop her natural resources in order to prevent that.. [India} sinks back into the semi-barbarism of two thousand years of discord and oppression. This also in connection with the Bengal rebellion. A very interesting work. Rare. (occas. foxing throughout.)
