Hedwig Courths-Maler was born out of wedlock in 1867 in the part of Germany known today as The Free State of Thuringia and christened Ernestine Frederike Elisabeth Mahler. Hedwig - as she called herself as achild - was raised by various foster parents. She first went to work in Leipzig as a sales assistant and wrote her first novel at the age of seventeen. Hedwit Courths-Mahler wrote primarily love stories which made her the best-sellingselling author of her age between 1905 and 1939. In 1939 the Nazis refused to deliver paper to her publisher. Finalle, the suffering of her daughter Friede Birkner, who was arrested by the Gestapo, silenced for ever the voice of this popular writer. Good to very good copy in original publisher's boards.
