[III-VIpp. of introduction], 175; [2, publ. preface], 173pp. Volume 1 NOT called-for in Royal Dutch Library, KB, nor calling for our second edition copy: a new [abridged] edition of 1858 is listed however. First volume contains a speech by the english minister John Newton (1725-1807) as held before an audience of commoners in his own London parish, which includes an annexe in which the Slave-trade on the African coast by the dutch is criticized, followed by a report Alexander Falconbridge, formerly a doctor aboard a dutch Slave-trader. (Slavery and trade was abolished in Great Britain in 1834 and finally by the dutch in 1863]. The second part is a personal account by John Newton of his conversion to christianity, as originally communicated in XIV letters directed to Thomas Haweis. Especially the parts dealing with the African slave-trade is of great interest indeed. Very good copy. Rare. (f.e.p. to part 1 rather foxed and soiled, small circular ex-lib. stamp at tail of ti.-p. to part 1, a very good and clearn copy however).
