Novel set on Java with as main character a javanese rice-growing Tani (farmer), illustrating the social deprivation and extortion of common javanese labourers and farmers in particular, by european, e.g. dutch, business men and investors. Author worked for an extended time as an editor of the Bataviaasch Nieuwsblad. Good copy in original publisher's cloth. (front inner hinger somewhat weakening but reinforced by a matching paper strip, some tiny spots on verso of hftitle and ti.-p.).
