Sulawesi, with as main character a boy, Batjo, son to a macassarese noble Daëng Manoewa, and his girlfriend Langkati. Langkatir refuses to live according to traditional or adat-law, opposing her marriage to a unscrupulous Arab money-lender. The Arab is unmasked by Daëng Manoewa during a cock-figt as an imposter, and the marriage is off. Incl. i.a. notes on the clan of Macassarese Priests or Bissoe's and their [;olitical] influence.
