A lavishly illustrated and well documented biography to this famous franch actor, 1922-1959, who made his acting debut on the stage in André Roussin's 'grande fille toute simple' in 1942 and made his first film appeaance in Yves Allégret's 'La boîte aux rèves' in 1943. Encouraged by Jean Cocteau, Philippe entered the Paris conservatoire and on leaveing secured more prestigious roles in both the theatre and in the cinema. He won widespread acclaim for his performance in Albert Camus' play 'Caligula' andsecured his growing reputation with Claude Autant-Lara's 'Diable au corps' in 1946. His career success continued throughout the 1950s. A very fine copy.
