Ronner, historical footnotes, list of contents, initial and decorative headpiece to chapter one only. The Life and times of the famous dutch Admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp (1598-1653), a dutch navy commander, especially active in the fight agains privateers from Duinkerken; his greatest achievement was the defeat of the Spanish Fleet, under the command of Admiral Antonio Oquendo, reinforced with an english squadron under the command of Sir John Pennington, and a squadron under the command of Michiel Dorne, who managed to escape the blockade of Duinkerken. After a reinforcement of the dutch Fleet, Tromp attacked on October 21, 1639. Despite the attmpts at protection by Pennington and Dorne the Spanish Fleet was defeated at the Battle of the Downs. Only the squadron commanded by Dorne managed to escape to Duinkerken. Maarten Tromp was killed during the First English War in the battle of Terheijden (near Scheveningen) on August 10, 1653 after having lost two earlier battles at sea in March and June of that same year.
