Title: Alfred Dreyfus. De Banneling op het Duivelseiland. (Liefde en lijden van den onschuldig veroordeelde en zijn gezin, den strijd tegen machtsmisbruik en onrecht)(subtitle on front wrapper). Orig. edn.
Description: Amsterdam-[Antwerpen], Hermann & Co., [..], 1931. sm. 8°. Tog. in 130 parts as orig. issued, orig. pict. col. publ. wraps. 3120pp. Text-ills. after drawings. (BRINKMAN, 1931, calls for part 1-43 only). Popularized story of the infamous so-called Dreyfus-Affair in France. Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935), an artillery-officer attached to the French General Staff, was falsely accused of high treason and, after a highly unfair courtmarshal behind closed doors, bereft of his rank and sentenced to life-long banishment to Devil's Island, french Guyana. The case was re-opened, under political and judicial pressure, in 1899. Dreyfus did not receive a full rehabilitation, but only a pardon on humanitary grounds. Full rehabilitation was granted in 1906. During the Great War, Dreyfus participaged in the defence of Paris. The whole cause of this Affair can be attributed to strong feelings of anti-semitism in the french army, especially amongst high-ranking officers. A rare & complete set in good condition. (some wraps. with light fraying at outer rims).
