Publishers provenance printed on recte of first leave with the official circular stam and original signature in white ink by Association's Head: Suparman Hadisoemarto, concise introduction to the introduction and history of Batik on Java on recte of next leave. Album contains further nine black leaves, each with an original batik-sample, each sized 19.5x15 cm., and each with a small original photograph in upper-left corner, each sized 6x6cm., depict. manual labour corresponding with the original samples, explanatory text in indonesian language with english translation. Album shows and explains the technical process of the art of Batik on Java, in nine steps (:) Starching, Ngemplong (smoothing the starched white), Nglowong (printing on both sides), Ngtren or Nembok (application of wax), Medel(blue dye application of indigo, ferrosulfate and lime), Ngrok (scraping the cloth), mBIRONI (covering with wax of those parts which have to stay blue), Njoga(colouring the cloth with an exctract made from the bark of tingi, sogadjawa, tegeran; the cloth is further dried in a shadow airy place. This process must be repeated twelve to fifteen times to prevent fading away of the brown soga-colour, afterwards the cloth is dipped into a lime and alum-solution), mBABAR (the last proces of removing all remaining wax by putting the cloth into hot water). This copy has an extra leave added, being a presentation leave to Professor Dr. E.W.H. Cruickshank, his name calligraphed in white ink at top-margin, visiting Indonesia as a member of the visiting team of the medical scientists. With the compliments and good wishes from the medical Faculty of the Gadjah Mada University at Jogjakarta. Signed in white ink by Prof.Dr. Sardjito , dated in print: Jogjakarta, 27th May 1953. Concise C.V. of Prof. Cruickshank, Aberdeen University, with a portrait, loosely added on a printed A-4 sized leave, folded. An excellent technical manual, that supplies good insight in the original javanese way of Batik-art. A very good copy. Very rare.
