Title: Abenteuerliche Reise durch China, die Tartarei, Siam, Pegu und andere Länder des östlichen Asiens. Neu bearb. von Ph. H. Külb.
Description: Jena, Costenoble, 19321868. Orig. cloth. [16], 412pp. [Bibliothek geogr. Reisen und Entdeckungen, 2]. The Portuguese adventurer Fernand Mendez Pinto sailed to India in 1537, and spent some years privateering on the coasts of Burma, Southeast Asia and China. He clams to have been in the party of Portuguese which in 1542 or 1543 made the first discovery of Japan; but his first voyage to this country, which he visited four times, seems to be in 1544. Mendez Pinto was an ardent admirer of Franciscus Xaverius, to whom he lent money to build a church in Yamaguchi, he also supplies an account of Xaverius' death in 1552. In 1554 he [Mendez Pinto], joined the Soc.Jesu at Goa, but two years later, in Japan, the Society allowed him to withdraw. This french edn. is merely an excerpt of the 2nd. french edn. in 3 volumes, published Paris 1830, but still supplies the most sailient details of the life of this famous 16th century Portuguese explorer. (despite some wear and rubbing to binding a good copy, contents clean).
