Large original coloured plate on thick cardboard with original protective metal corners preserved, being a bird's-eye view of Sabang-harbour, N.Sumatra, after a watercolour by Gabriëlse, title printed in bold type at tail, extensive publ. list of Wall-plates and maps printed on verso(blank) of plate. The need to build a harbour at Sabang-bay was already felt at the outbreak of the first Aceh-war, 1873, but the official concession for the establishment of a Coal-station at Sabang-bay was granted to Messrs. Lange & Co., in 1887. Owing to the fabulous development of East-Coast of Sumatra as a centre for large-scale enterprises, and the development of Steam-ship traffic to and fro colonial Indonesia, Sabang-harbouw became in a relatively short time an extremely important center for im-and exports. Educational Wall-plates, with its descriptive text-booklets, like this one on Sabang-harbour, colonial Indonesia, became a corner-stone of geographical & historical education on dutch primary schools, in this form(on thick cardboard with metal corners, in a variety of sizes), in use up till the 1990's in the Netherlands. A very good copy, with its orignal textbooklet added. Scarce.
