Title: Zonder Tropen geen Europa.
Description: Bloemendaal, the Author, 1926. sm.2°. recent cloth, orig. wraps. bound-up. Hftitle(verso blank). 264pp. 334 ills. after author's field-photos, tabs. in text and full-p., index, errata. The author, a wealthy apothecary from Semarang is best known for his magnum opus Kromo Blanda, also privately published between 1915-1923. In this work Tillema posits that both Europe and the United States are, and will be in future, completele dependent for their raw materials from the tropics, i.e. colonial Indonesia. He therefore strongly advocates the uplift of the indigenous population by means of strong improvement of physical/psychological health by means of better housing, medicare, lower death-rates among newly borns/children and adults, better wages, food, labour conditions &c..&c..This all in order to meet future demands of the Western World to the production of any kind of important products. Tillema however was not solely interested in the future of the West: he was really socially concerned with the improvement of life-conditions of the indonesian population. Good copy. Rare.
