Description: London: Printed for C. Davis, 1748. Second edition, 8vo, iv, [2], 72pp., with half-title, printers device to title with the neat faint stamp of the Birmingham Medical Institute, recent calf-backed marbled boards, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt. "First authoritative account of both diphtheria and scarlatinal angina, although the writer failed to differentiate between the two conditions."—G&M. In 1747 and 1748 several epidemics of angina had occurred in London, which Fothergill describes together with an historical account of the disease in other countries. He then gives the first full account of the symptoms and treatment of diphtheria in this country, one of the great classic descriptions of a disease in English medicine. The first edition is now very rare, only 500 copies being printed, and this second edition appeared in the same year. Garrison & Morton, 5049 (first edition).
