New technology provided the means for artists to experiment, and a new market for creative bindings cumulated with the Great Exhibition in 1851. Practitioners such as Walter Crane and John Leighton broke new ground. Edmund King describes and indexes over 750 different books in detail, concentrating on those that have cover designs signed by artists, or who are known to be responsible for it. Many are illustrated in colour or black and white.
