Author a Left Social-Revolutionary, the deputy Commissar of Justice who served on the commission for drafting the Constitution of the RSFSR. He was arrested by the Bolsheviks in 1919 when the SR Party was banned, and left Russia afterwards, using a forged passport. In 1922, he co-organized the Committee for Famine Relief for Russia, an effort headed by notable non-Bolshevik social leaders and then disproved and taken over by the Soviet government. He continued to represent left socialists at various international congresses in Europe.
