Concerning the bacterial vaccines of Dr. Jaime Ferrán y Clua [1852-1929] ["the modern cholera vaccine traces its history to the crude live version that Dr. Jaime Ferrán y Clua prepared and tested in 1884 during an epidemic in Tortosa, Spain...Ferrán had observed that guinea pigs surviving injections of living cholera organisms became resistant to developing disease from further injections of cholera material. Borrowing from Pasteur's techniques, Ferrán developed a vaccine that immunized the animals...But faced with the urgency of the epidemic, Ferrán apparnetly did not feel that he had time to make further experiments. That year 50,000 people received three injections of his cholera vaccine....the results were disastrous..." -Lawrence K. Altman " Who Goes First", p. 120].
