[A defense against charges of theft authored by Count Libri, a writer on the history of mathematics. A member of the Academie des Sciences, Libri stole a large quantity of original manuscripts from the archives of the Academie, l'Institut de France & the Observatoire and in 1847 sold most of them for 200,000 francs to the 4th Earl of Ashburnham. They were returned to the Bibliotheque Nationale in the 1880s.]
