Friedrich Engels had helped Gustav Gross with some biographical information, as he wrote in a letter to the Russian exile socialist and former Paris Communard Pyotr L. Lavrov on February 12, 1885: 'The other facts given by Gross are also correct, as far as I remember (Tussy has my copy, I can't compare it). Of course, I have nothing in common with his stupid criticism of Marx's theories. He had been recommended to me by Viennese socialists, asked me a few biographical questions, and I told him the facts'. As early as January 13, 1885, Engels had sent Karl Kautsky, who then wrote a review of Gross's Marx biography in the 'Neue Zeit' published, wrote: 'The big one seems like a cattle, but a decent one. I can't say anything against the biography, if you want to beat up his theory confusion, then I don't envy you the work.." -Alfred Klahr Gesellschaft website,4/ 2004]. ["The first biography of Marx appeared two years after his death, written by Gustav Gross in 1885. It was a rather short work, but already biased: it concentrated on Marx’s late economic writings which were first gaining a degree of attention at the time..." - Diana Siclovan in "Reviews in History", August 2013].
