VG. ¶ These are the reminiscences of an eye-witness and participant in diplomacy, revolution and war in China during the "Roaring Twenties": The first part concerns the years 1920-1921 and is an account of the activities of the first Soviet diplomatic mission to China, of which the author was the secretary. Officially the mission represented the Far Eastern Republic, a provisional buffer state formed by Moscow for the purpose of preventing a direct clash with Japan. The author gives a lively description of the journey across the Gobi Desert to China, the diplomatic scene in Peking, & encounters with a number of prominent Chinese & foreign personalities. In the second part, the author as secretary of the staff of Russian military advisors, headed by General Blucher, describes the work of the staff and the aid given to the Chinese revolution in 1926-1927. The writer was closely acquainted with people prominent in the revolution, and draws telling portraits of Borodin, Blucher, Madame Sun Yat-Sen and other personages.
