While en route, the ship struck a reef near the island of Corsica..The incident caused him to put off academic work & devote his time to develop a device he had previously conceived for preventing the sinking of ships. In Paris, he met & gained the friendship of Professor McKenzie of Urbana, Illinois, who was instrumental in his eventual sailing for the United States. On his arrival, he immediately took up the task of developing his invention.. For years he felt that the moral responsibiltiy for ship disasters lay with him, & the refusal of the U.S. Government to heed his recommendations in industrializing his device for sea safety drove him to a heated protest direct to the President of the United States on October 12, 1934. This was made by a telegram, & in language construed as affronting the Administration. Consequently he was arrested & detained by the Police Department of Washington, D.C...the charge -"Annoying the President of the United States & Other Officials with egotistical projects". During his detention, he outlined the following Epic, & wrote the greater part of the Fantasmagoria & Prolog.." - from preface by Theodore P. Vavlites].
