For the Muslims of Laccadives, particularly of the Andrott Island, that day was a day particularly special because that day happens to be the death anniversary of Hazrath Ubaidulla Thangal, who brought & propagated Islam in laccadives. Towards evening of 23rd April 1990, on the eve of Ramzan 27th 1410 Hijra, there was a police firing in the vicinity of the Juma Masjid, to be exact from within the compound wall of that Masjid.
