Trandberg, a native of the Danish island of Bornholm, left the Danish State Lutheran Church, emigrated to America and was hired as an Instructor by the Scandinavian division of the Congregational Church's Chicago Theological Seminary. During this period Trandberg was involved in founding (Racine, June 30 1889 ) & leading the "first Scandinavian Evangelical-Lutheran Free Church in North America with biblical-fundamentalist foundations". The Seminary required that he join the Congregational Church. He refused and was fired.
