Light marginal browning and occasional thumbing, some marginal pencil markings, lower leading corner of p.27-8 torn away with some loss of text, couple of corners sl. creased, light waterstaining to corners and some edges of full page plates and title page, later marbled e.ps., illus. leaf p. xvii-xviii bound in before p.iii, rebound in half dark green morocco with green cloth boards, some minor soiling and rubbing, gilt filleted raised bands gilt motifs and gilt title to faded spine sl. rubbed at head, t.e.green. ¶ Paul B. du Chaillu (1835-1903). The author set out on an exploring expedition to West Africa, in 1855, spending four years, and travelling 8,000 miles on foot, with no companions. On his return he published the above work, an account of his expedition, in which he gave much valuable information about the country and its people.
