The work has its origins in Charles Estienne's Praedium Rusticum (1554), the French version of which was edited and seen through the press by Jean Liébault in 1564 under the title L'Agriculture et Maison Rustique. Numerous editions, revisions, and updates followed, with French horticulturalist Louis Liger's two-volume modernized version, [the above], first appearing in 1700. Louis Liger (1658–1717) French agronomist and prolific writer on flora and fauna.
