Light age toning, original gilt lettered red cloth, minor marking and wear, spine faded and sl. frayed. ¶ The Dutch scientific exploration expedition sent out in 1904–1905 by the Royal Netherlands Geographical Society with the aim of mapping the completely unknown interior of southwestern New Guinea and attempting to reach the 'eternal snow' that had been observed on the peaks of the central highlands from a Dutch ship as early as the 17th century. Although the expedition ended in a fiasco due to the unrealistic objectives and the infighting and quarrels among the participants, it laid the ground for future more successful expeditions and it was the first systematic exploration of a large part of the southern coastal areas.
