Written in Latin and first published in two parts in 1615 and 1625, the Annals is the earliest full-scale history of Elizabeth I's reign and hailed as a landmark in the development of English historical writing. Written at the behest of Lord Burghley, this first volume of books 1-3 covers her reign from 1589 to her death in 1603. Part two of the Annales, comprising its fourth book, was eventually published posthumously in Latin at Leiden in 1625, after Camden’s death as per his request to the King ‘... knowing how unjust capers the unlearned Readers are.' This first volume includes a description of Drake's voyage around the world in 1577-80, as well as information on Drake's early life, obtained first hand from the man himself. And with references to tobacco.
