Hooke started life as a puritan and joined the Dukes of Argyll and Monmouth abroad and later participated in Monmouth’s abortive rebellion which ended in defeat at Sedgemoor. Hooke was pardoned in 1688, he became a catholic and a staunch supporter of James II. After James’ abdication he fought with the Jacobites and later with the French army where he rose to high rank. Hooke’s nephew, also Nathaniel Hooke, the historian of Rome partly transcribed the correspondence of Hooke from 1703 to 1707 and probably compiled the above work.
