Title page within double rule, engraved port. frontis., 6 engravings showing the investiture robes of various titles of rank, numerous ills., many decorative initial letters and headpieces. Light age toning, ex.-libris Sotheby & Co. and Wodehouse Kimberley, contemporary gilt rule edged mottled calf boards, sl. loss to upper corners moreso to lower board, early reback in gilt tooled calf with repairs to head and tail and sm. perforation to spine, lower joint cracked. ¶ Wing (2nd ed., 1994), S2440B; ESTC R221821 ‘Frontis. portrait (pi1v) of the author signed: R: White sculpsit. With 2 final advertisement leaves [not in our copy as is often the case].’ The third and best edition of this work first published in quarto in 1614. The work is in two parts, the first deals with the titles and dignitaries of Emperors, kings and other rulers. The second part with inferior titles and including feminine titles, honorary attributes and Laws of Precedence. The above work ‘displayed a mature and almost unparalleled grasp of continental evidence and scholarship (including works on provincial as well as national history), and an acquaintance with English evidence (including manuscripts); it also reflected on the nature of law itself.’ ODNB.
