The sole English edition of this work originally published in the Hague in 1698 in four volumes, following the conclusion of the peace negotiations conducted at the Royal Palace of Ryswick mid-way between Hague and Delft. The, indecisive, Treaty of Ryswick ended the war of the Grand Alliance/League of Augsburg 1689-97 between France on the one side, and England, Spain, Holland and the Empire on the other. The Alliance was under the leadership of William III of England who had sought to check the ambitious designs of Louis XIV. The peace treaty was signed between France and the three powers, England, Spain and Holland on the 20th September 1697. The Empire did not sign until 30th October.
