Description: J. Hatchard and Son ..., 1840. 1st Ed. Sm. 8vo. [viii] + 507pp. 25 plates including 2 hand coloured of which 1 is folding (with a sm. tear to fold), text ills. Light age toning, marbled e.ps. and edges, contemporary calf boards with gilt ruling and blind tooling to edges of boards, some marking to boards, rebacked with original spine laid down, intricate gilt ruling and tooling with gilt lettering to spine. ¶ Elizabeth Caroline Hamilton Gray (1800–1887) Scottish historian and travel author, born in Alva, Clackmannanshire. Gray first interested in the history of the Etruscans after a visit to an exhibition of their artefacts in London in 1837 organised by Domenico Campanari. She pursued the subject on a visit to Italy in 1837–1839, drawing on contacts in German and Italian archaeological circles. She published the above work which served both as a travelogue and an account of her archaeological research.
